This is a great project to practice sewing accurately. It also makes a nice gift. You don’t have to make it hold pencils! I’ve made one for my daughter to hold her paint brushes and one for myself to hold my crochet hooks. It’d also be a great way to store makeup brushes. 
 
What you will need:
Main fabric and lining a 50 cm square of each is enough
Matching thread (although I usually use white)
Pins
Sewing machine
Elastic 15 cm
Large Button or I like a wooden toggle. You can also use a piece of ribbon or bias binding instead of a button and elastic.
Removable pen or chalk
Fabric scissors
